How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Rotating tires

When it comes to regularly scheduled maintenance, tire rotation is definitely an important piece. But how often should you rotate your tires? While the specifics will depend on your specific make and model of your vehicle, the general rule of thumb is 5,000-8,000 miles. If you want the exact number for your car, check your owner’s manual. Learn more about tire rotation frequency below and schedule your service appointment with Landers McLarty Ford today!

Rotating Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

How you rotate your tires will depend on the type of vehicle you have. In front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles, the power from the engine is sent to the front tires. If the power is sent to rear tires, then you have a rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicle. If you have either one of these types of vehicles, keep the following in mind:

  • For FWD or RWD cars, tire rotation needs to be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for exact numbers.
  • If you’re performing a FWD tire rotation yourself, remember to flip sides when moving the rear tires. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. However, when moving the front tires to the back, keep them on the same side.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, invert the previously mentioned process. Flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

You guessed it – in all wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, the power from the engine goes to all of the tires. Because of this, AWD vehicles will have a different rotation pattern. Most AWD tires need to be rotated every 3,000 – 5,000 miles since all of the tires will go through constant wear and tear in Centre. Here’s the rotation pattern:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.

Why Rotate Tires?

Tire rotation is very important. The biggest reason is because it extends the life of your tires, but there are other reasons too:

  • Less noise on the road
  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Relieves unnecessary stress on the drivetrain

To be better prepared for hazardous weather around Trion, GA and Chattanooga, TN, keep tire rotations as part of your maintenance plan. Remember that properly caring for your tires doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. If you’re in need of replacement, our tire center can help you out!
